Amanda Muñiz migrated to the U.S. at the age of eight and currently resides in Oakland. She is presently attending San Francisco State University, where she plans to attain her Bachelor’s degree in English literature with a minor in Latino studies. She hopes to become an English teacher, who is not only able to empower her students but her community through the form of education.

Amanda believes that education is one of the many things that can bring change within a community; however, she recognizes that education, especially higher education, is not accessible to everyone. As an undocumented student, she too, has felt defeated by the lack of information and financial aid required to apply to a four year University or Jr. College. She wishes for her experiences to be of aid for her future students and her community.

As a current DreamSF fellow, Amanda is working at Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA). MUA is a grassroots organization of Latina immigrant women, whose goal is self-growth and empowerment for the community as a whole through social and economic justice. Amanda is focusing her work at MUA in Campaña and immigrant affairs. She is active in MUA’s community outreach program, where she is learning about the various issues facing her community and working towards alleviating those challenges. Amanda hopes that the knowledge and leadership skills she gains in MUA, in addition to her experiences as an undocumented student, will ultimately her help better provide to her future students and community.
